  • What is a Flexible Spending Account?

WESD sponsors a flexible benefit plan allowing you to set aside a portion of your earnings to pay for your qualified out-of-pocket medical and/or child or dependent care expenses. The pretax deduction is then divided into per-paycheck withdrawals. Please see www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf for a complete list of qualified expenses.

    How Does It Work?

If electing to participate, you will need to calculate the amount you want to contribute to your flexible spending account for the entire plan year. Take the annual elected amount and divide it by your number of payroll deductions (either 19 or 26 pay deductions depending on your position) to calculate your per-paycheck deduction cost.

The annual amount you elect can then be used to pay for certain childcare and medical expenses not covered by insurance, including prescription drugs, co-pays and many over-the-counter medicines. Since you are lowering your overall taxable income by having the amount selected placed into the FSA, you save on federal, state, Social Security and Medicare taxes.

  • All FSA-eligible expenses must be incurred between coverage dates of July 1 and June 30 in order to be eligible for reimbursement. A prescription is required for many over-the-counter medications (such as laxatives, sleep aids and baby rash ointments) to be eligible.  Please review the information provided here and visit the following site to determine if this benefit will work for you: FSA Eligible Expenses
